How to Care for Concrete Foundations

Essential tips for maintaining the integrity of your concrete foundation.

Water Management

Proper water management is crucial for maintaining your home's foundation. Ensure gutters and downspouts are functioning properly to divert water away from the foundation. This helps prevent soil erosion and pooling water, which can lead to foundation issues.

Consider landscaping that slopes away from the house to naturally direct rainwater. Installing French drains or a sump pump may also be beneficial in high water table areas.

Regular Inspections

Inspect your foundation periodically for cracks, uneven surfaces, or water leakage. Early detection can prevent these minor issues from developing into significant structural problems.

If you notice cracks larger than the width of a pencil, it’s advisable to consult with an expert. Routine inspection is vital to maintaining the overall health and safety of your home.

Controlling Vegetation

Trees and large shrubs planted too close to your house can cause foundation issues. As roots grow, they can disrupt the surrounding soil and put pressure on the foundation.

To mitigate this risk, plant large trees and shrubs at least 20 feet away from the house. Regularly trim back roots or consider root barriers to prevent them from encroaching too close.
